[0:00] Okay, well, we're kind of working our way through the notes that I've given you, the study guide, and you might be able to find where we left off.

[0:21] It's point number four under the deity of the Holy Spirit. So you'll have to turn just a few pages and debate whether to just give you a copy of where we left off and go from there or just give you the whole thing.

[0:35] So I'll just give you the whole thing in case you might need it. And we worked our way through a couple of bullet points under point number four, which is the works ascribed to the Holy Spirit clearly demonstrate his deity.

[0:51] That's what we're talking about here, the deity of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is not only a person, and that was pretty much the subject of our study last week, but he's also God, the third member of the Trinity.

[1:08] And there are a number of evidences from Scripture that make that very clear that the Holy Spirit is God. And so we're listing some of the works of the Holy Spirit ascribed to him from Scripture.

[1:23] The first one was his work as Creator, and we looked at that last week, so we'll not cover that again. Secondly, through the inspiration or in the inspiration of the Scriptures, the Bible, the Word of God, and the Holy Spirit, very instrumental, very key in inspiring the Bible writers down through the various centuries to write not only accurately, but it would be inspired.

[1:53] Actually, God breathed. And so the Holy Spirit was involved in that. Those two things we saw last week. And then third, the guidance or guidance of the believer.

[2:04] However, this is a very important ministry of the Holy Spirit when you agree. We need guidance. And we don't always, obviously, are not always conscious and sense the direct guidance of the Holy Spirit.

[2:23] It's not always perceptible to us. There are times, though, aren't there? When God just guides us, it's just very clear, just so profound. But He is certainly guiding us and directing us in ways that we're not even cognizant of.

[2:41] And this is a part of His ministry. And I gave you a verse of Scripture, Acts 16, 6-7. I decided to go ahead and incorporate the Scriptures up here because we're going to look at so many of them.

[2:53] And we don't want to, I don't know, waste time would be the right word, proper word. But it takes time to thumb in the Bibles to find them. If we were just talking about a few Scriptures, I'd let you thumb through your Bibles and find them.

[3:07] But I'm going to go ahead and put it up here. And here's the passage in Acts 16. Now, when they had gone through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to preach the Word in Asia.

[3:19] You kind of remember this particular story in Paul's life. And so here they're traveling one way and the Holy Spirit forbids them to go. Now, we're not told how He did that.

[3:32] You know, if it was direct, you know, some audible voice, I kind of doubt that it was. But we're talking about the Apostle Paul here. So the Holy Spirit could have spoken to Him in a very profound way.

[3:43] We're not told. But the fact is that the Holy Spirit was, in a negative sense, guiding them in that He forbade them to go to a certain place. And then it goes on to say, after they had come to Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia.

[3:59] But the Spirit did not permit them. And as we read on, we discover why. Because the Holy Spirit wanted them to go to Macedonia. And a vision appeared to Paul in the night.

[4:12] A man of Macedonia stood and pleaded with him, saying, Come over to Macedonia and help us. And though it's not repeated again that the Holy Spirit was speaking here or leading here, He certainly, it's implied that He was involved in this, in this vision of this man of Macedonia.

[4:30] All right, so we're clear from that particular passage that the Holy Spirit guiding His people, in this case, guiding them to do missionary work in specific places.

[4:44] And then, under the works described of the Holy Spirit, the humanity of Christ was miraculously formed by the Holy Spirit. And Matthew 1, verse 20, this visitation or vision or dream with Joseph, and the Bible says, But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary, your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.

[5:19] Conceived of the Holy Spirit. So, the work of the Holy Spirit. And so, what is the next one here? Jesus was raised from the dead by or through the Holy Spirit.

[5:36] Romans 8, 11, But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

[5:52] Alright, so this is a work ascribed to the Holy Spirit. So, the fourth, did I say four on the last one?

[6:05] I may have got my numbers wrong. You'll forgive me on that. The absolute sovereignty and supremacy of the Holy Spirit.

[6:16] The absolute sovereignty and supremacy of the Holy Spirit. Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit. Give me a chance to catch up there if you're filling in the blank.

[6:31] Sovereignty and supremacy of the Holy Spirit. Jesus Himself was led by the Holy Spirit. You remember this passage? Then Jesus was led by the Spirit. That's the Holy Spirit.

[6:43] Into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. Alright, so the Holy Spirit led Jesus. The distribution of all spiritual gifts is according to the will of the Holy Spirit.

[6:57] According to 1 Corinthians chapter 12. And I cited a couple of verses out of that passage. Skipping a whole lot. But in verse 7.

[7:08] But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for profit. For the profit of all. The manifestation, of course, is the spiritual gifts. Because then, in verses 8-10, you have the list of those spiritual gifts.

[7:23] But one and the same Spirit works all these things. Distributing to each one individually as He wills. That's verse 11 out of 1 Corinthians 12. Alright, so again, remember, in between those two statements, you have a listing of these spiritual gifts.

[7:40] And it is the Sovereign and Supreme Holy Spirit that manifested these gifts. Gave these gifts to God's people.

[7:55] Then He calls people for the work of the ministry. Acts chapter 13, verse 2.

[8:06] As they, the church, this is the church at Antioch, ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said. Again, we're not told just how He said it.

[8:19] In what form He spoke. But He spoke to the church and the church leaders. Now separate to me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them. Then, having fasted and prayed, laid hands on them, they sent them away.

[8:32] Alright, so here's the Holy Spirit. We're talking about the sovereignty and supremacy of the Holy Spirit. And it's seen in Scripture through these works. Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit.

[8:44] The distribution of spiritual gifts. And the Holy Spirit calls people to the ministry. And we have an account of that there in Acts. So what's the conclusion?

[8:57] And this really is the end of lesson number one. Which I did not get finished last week. We're going to go into lesson two here in just a minute. The conclusion is pretty simple. The Holy Spirit is a person.

[9:09] Not some supernatural force. Or some principle. Or some dynamic of God. He is a person. And He is God.

[9:21] He is third member of the Trinity. Alright. That's the clear conclusion from Scripture. When you look at the scriptural evidence of the person and deity of the Holy Spirit.

[9:34] It becomes very clear. Okay. Next we're going to discuss the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament.

[9:45] It's important that we understand that the Holy Spirit did not begin His work in the New Testament. The Holy Spirit was involved in the Old Testament as well.

[9:56] Though there are some differences. And we'll talk about that here in just a minute. But it's the same Holy Spirit. And so what does the Old Testament tell us about the Spirit?

[10:07] Number one. While there is a distinction between the operation of the Holy Spirit in the lives of believers in the Old and New Testament.

[10:17] And there is. And we'll see some of that. The Holy Spirit is evidently active in the Old Testament. I don't mean evidently with a question mark.

[10:28] There's evidence. Evidence in the Old Testament may be worded poorly. But that is what the word means. Alright. It's evident that He was active in the Old Testament.

[10:38] And so let's just compare a few things between the Old Testament and the New Testament. In the Old Testament, it seems clear from all the references of the Holy Spirit regarding working in a person.

[10:56] That He came on believers for service. He would come upon them. You know, you have that stated quite a number of times in the Old Testament.

[11:06] The Holy Spirit was on Him. Or came upon Him. But in the New Testament, it's clear. The references of the Holy Spirit in relation to the believer is that He indwells. He doesn't just come upon them and use them for service.

[11:22] But He actually indwells all true believers. Now, that's a distinction. There's something new. Or maybe not new, but additional.

[11:35] The soul that comes in the New Testament by virtue of the work of Christ. And then in the Old Testament, He came and went in the lives of people. He would come and then He would go.

[11:47] But in the New Testament, He came to stay in the life of the believer. He's not a visitor in your life. He's not a tenant part-time.

[11:58] He's a resident. And the Holy Spirit, once the Holy Spirit comes and indwells the believer, which, by the way, takes place at conversion.

[12:10] It's not something that happens sometime after you're saved in some kind of subsequent experience. And we'll get into that a little bit later in our study.

[12:20] But He comes at the moment you believe the Holy Spirit. In fact, the Bible says if you do not have the Spirit, you don't belong to Jesus. Alright, so there's a distinction between the old and the new.

[12:33] You have examples of Him coming and going and coming and going in the new. Coming on people for certain service. And in the New Testament, He indwells and He stays.

[12:45] He's there as a permanent resident. In the Old Testament, they do not understand the word of the Holy Spirit or work. That should be work. In the New Testament, we more fully understand His work in our lives and in our world.

[13:04] And we do so because we have the full revelation. We have all of Scripture. Alright, let's move on from there.

[13:17] Number two, the Hebrew word translated spirit in the Old Testament is pronounced ruach. I'm sure that will be important for you to know.

[13:28] You can just use that word. And then you can say, hey, to your friends, I just spoke a word of Hebrew. Ruach. And He's always at work changing things as the Spirit of God.

[13:41] And this is how He's designated in the Old Testament. In the Old Testament, He is said to mold creation into shape and animate created beings.

[13:55] A couple of Scripture references. One of these we looked at last week. Or that's part of one we looked at last week. In Psalm 33, verse 6, By the word of the Lord, the heavens were made, and all the host of them by the breath.

[14:10] There's that word ruach. By the breath of His mouth. And it's a reference. The implication is that this is the Holy Spirit at work.

[14:21] And then in the Genesis 1-2 passage, The earth was without form and void, and darkness was on the face of the deep, And the Spirit, there's ruach again, the Spirit of God, Was hovering over the face of the waters.

[14:34] And we looked at that passage last week. And I may mention the fact that really you have all three members of the Godhead Who are involved or mentioned or their presence is implied there in verses 1 and 2.

[14:47] Genesis 1, from God the Father to the Word, speaking things into existence. And then you have the Spirit brooding, molding, animating creation.

[15:03] And so, the Holy Spirit, that's the Holy Spirit's work in the Old Testament. B, control. The Holy Spirit is said to control the course of nature And history.

[15:19] The verse here in Isaiah 34, verse 6 Is just kind of a snippet of that larger passage. And we're not going to take the time to look at it.

[15:29] But here's what that verse says. And then let me help put it in its context. Search from the book of the Lord and read Not one of these shall fail. What things?

[15:40] The things that Isaiah the prophet has already listed. And he's listed things concerning nations and animal life And the processes that take place.

[15:52] And he says here, Not one of these shall fail. Not one shall act or mate. For my mouth has commanded it. And his Spirit has gathered them. In this translation, the Spirit is involved in this.

[16:08] And so, there is this control. The control of the course of things. Both nature and history. Nothing in history has just simply happened Apart from the sovereign work and control of God the Holy Spirit.

[16:28] See, he has said to bring about personal responses to God In the form of faith, repentance, and obedience. And we could go to a number of places in Scripture That deal with that.

[16:43] It's the Holy Spirit work. And this famous verse in Psalm 51 Create in me a clean heart, O God And renew a steadfast spirit within me But do not cast me away from your presence And do not take your Holy Spirit from me Restore to me the joy of your salvation And uphold me by your generous Or really the better word is willing Spirit And this is Ruach, the Holy Spirit.

[17:12] So he brings about personal responses to God And then, one last one under this, under number two Equip, enable, and empower believers For acts of service to God.

[17:28] He has said to do these things To equip us, to empower us, to enable us 1 Samuel chapter 16 verse 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil And anointed him, that's David, in the midst of his brothers And the Spirit of the Lord came upon David From that day forward.

[17:46] And you, I'm sure, know quite a bit about David's life And all that God did in his life and through his life He was a great king Accomplished many, many great things And all of that we are to give credit to Ascribe to the enabling, the empowering The equipping power of the Holy Spirit Alright Conclusion then Just a few points under the Conclusions concerning the Holy Spirit In the Old Testament The Holy Spirit did many of the same works In the Old Testament as he did And does in these New Testament times That's a clear conclusion There's now an indwelling of the Holy Spirit Of which the Old Testament saints never knew They never knew it Because Jesus had not come And the gift of the Holy Spirit had not been given And the marked difference, I guess

[18:48] Then we could say, in conclusion Is that the ministry of the Holy Spirit In the New Testament Unlike the Old Testament Was a residential ministry Came to indwell God's people And indwell the church Through the indwelling of God's people And then see the primary distinction Between the work of the Holy Spirit And the Old from the New Testament Is in his focus And here it is primarily His work now relates directly to Jesus Christ In the New Testament Jesus said, He shall testify Of me Of me John 15, 26 All right Now Holy Spirit in the teachings of Jesus The Greek word translated Spirit in the New Testament Is pneuma You know, we get some words from that Don't we?

[19:47] Can you think of some? Pneumonia Pneumonia Yeah You said pneumatic? Yeah, yeah Pneumatic tools Huh? Oh, did you say that to me?

[19:59] How did you know about it? She's copying off of me Oh But, you know And the word pneuma Can also be translated Wind Breath Air And But pneuma Generally Though not in every case Because You know The context We'll decide But in most cases The New Testament Is a reference to The third person of the Godhead The Holy Spirit In John Chapters 14 to 16 Jesus speaks Of the promise Of the Holy Spirit The promise of the Holy Spirit And he speaks of The threefold work Of the Spirit A Convicting the lost Convicting the lost And that's the work Of the Holy Spirit John 16 7

[22:00] I want to mention it here Is another name For the Holy Spirit I think someone Probably mentioned that Last week When we were kind of Trying to Brainstorm And list all of the names Of the Holy Spirit That we could think of Perakletos Is the Is the name For the Holy Spirit And that's why In King James I don't know if it is In the King James But in the New King James Helper is capitalized Proper name In Perakletos One Called alongside And that's What the word Perakletos means And then We have the name Holy Spirit The Holy Spirit He will teach you All things And bring to your Remembrance All things That I said to you Now this Has direct Implication To the apostles And those Who would be Writing the scriptures And he did bring Those teachings To their minds So that they Could write them down Just exactly The way the Holy Spirit Guided them To do so But the ministry

[23:01] By implication Is a continuing Ministry in the life Of every believer He teaches us All things Brings Things to our Remembrance And then in John 16 13 Passage The spirit Of truth Will guide you Into all truth And he will Tell you Things to come And again The immediate Sense And meaning Of the passage Is You know Directed Toward His apostles But by Implication It is also A word for us To His ministry To us See Glorifying The Lord Jesus And I've Already Mentioned This I think Under The other Category But Jesus said He will Glorify me For he Will take Of mine Of what Is mine And declare It to you All things That the Father Has are mine Therefore I said That he Will take Of mine And declare It to you So he Will glorify Me You might Remember

[25:02] His Ministry Is glorify The Lord Jesus And so Next time You sing It Even if Everybody Else Sing Something Different Sing it This way When you Get to The Holy Spirit Glorify Christ's Name In all The Earth And that's Exactly What his Ministry Is Alright So The Test And I Added This Because You ought To Think of The Implications Of This Statement In Relation To A lot Of So Called Ministries That Are Going On In The World Today And Theologies Out There But The Test Of Any Movement Of The Holy Spirit You Hear About That A lot The Holy Spirit Is Moving The Holy Spirit Did This And Thus And Such The Test Of Any Movement Of The Holy Spirit Is Whether Or Not Jesus Is Glorified Now You Just Just Remember That Next Time You Turn On TV In If You Do Watch The

And You Tune In To Some Worship Service Or Something And Find Out If They're Glorifying The Lord Jesus Christ If It's Totally And No Mention Of Jesus No Worship Of The Lord Jesus His Works His Ministry His Words Then You Ought To Question Whether This Is A Real Movement Of The Holy Spirit I Have Work Of The Holy Spirit In The Believer How Much Time We Have About Six Minutes Number One His Saving Work Regeneration!

[27:13] The Setting Free Work It's Kind of Awkward English But You're Going To Find Out That All Of These Start With The Letter S Alright His Setting Free Work And Use The Emancipation The Word Emancipation In This Sense He Sets Us Free From The Slavery To Control The Power Of Sin We're Emancipated In That Sense There Is Therefore Know

[28:13] Now No Condemnation To Those Who Are In Christ Jesus Who Do Not Walk According To The Flesh But According To The Spirit For The Law Of The Spirit Of Life In Christ Jesus Has Made Me Free From The Law Of Sin And Death The Absolute Control And And Guilt The Judgment All Of These Things Of Sin And Death!
