[0:00] So let me go ahead and read, starting with verse 35 of chapter 4, chapter 4. [0:21] ! On the same day, the evening of God, He said to them, let us cross over to the other side. Now, you can look back and see that Jesus has been teaching most people there on the shore from there. [0:37] And so that's kind of the occasion. And He says, well, I'm at the same day. And He said, let's cross over to the other side. All right, verse 36. Now, when they had death in the multitude, they took Him along the evening of the boat as He was, and other little boats were also leaving. [0:58] And a great wind saw the boat, and waves of evening, so that it was already in. But He was in the stern, the sweet, from the low. [1:09] And they woke in and said to Him, Teacher, do you not care that we are in the carousel? Then He arose, and the big wind, and said to the sea, Please, be still. [1:20] The wind ceased, but a great calm. And He said to them, Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have been played? And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, Who can't this be, that even the men and the sea lay hands? [1:40] This is an interesting story. And earlier, of the parallel account, there are some differences here, some additional information that it is interesting. [1:51] And it helps us to find an application that pertains to us, to us in church. And so we have this in Brighton, we have this Brighton, Miracle, Miracle in the next place, this experience that the disciples have had here, Jesus, this is a time that we would love to live in, to be a part of that, maybe not initially to be in the storm and all of that, but to see that Jesus is leading an incredible experience. [2:25] And this is what the disciples experienced. Not just as close disciples, but many others, as you can tell from the story. Now, in Timon's story, though I don't think of an application that goes beyond, maybe just the narration, the story itself, or use it to make some application, but the story was never intended just to wow it. [2:50] And we really ought to consider that every time we read, in the end of the gospels, we need the accounts of the Son of Jesus, great theory. [3:01] Now, God didn't put them in there just to depress us, and wow us, and excite us. There's some value in this. And so Jesus has been teaching, if you can go back and look at the context, we can do that tonight. [3:16] But just suffice it to say that Jesus has been teaching on some kingdom principles, we've been doing this portion of Mark's account. Kingdom principles, just before this particular incident, they've been doing it by way of peril, and you go back and read that on your own. [3:35] And now, we can see then some kingdom principles, but you've done a lot. The moment you've done a moment. The moment you've done a moment. The moment you've done a moment. The moment you've done a moment. The moment you've done a moment. The moment you've done a moment. [3:46] The moment you've done a moment. The moment you've done a moment. The moment you've done a moment. The moment you've done a moment. The moment you've done a moment. The moment you've done a moment. The moment you've done a moment. The moment you've done a moment. The moment you've done a moment. The moment you've done a moment. The moment you've done a moment. [3:57] The moment you've done a moment. The moment you've done a moment. The moment you've done a moment. The moment you've done a moment. Now, what you notice, we have a short sentence that is kind of tagged on in verse 26. [4:12] 36, right? Five words. 36. Look at that. It's tagged on with you. You may think this is insignificant. [4:24] This is really what helps us, creates for us an application for us here tonight. Our church. First 36, in other than those. [4:37] That little thing is added. Other than those were also needed. Now, they're still living out of the middle of the story, even though they're not mentioned here. [4:50] But you have to suppose that they are there, there are other little boats with the air. And so, the picture here is kind of a small thing of boats. [5:04] Fishing boats, I would say. You know, small thing. I don't know how many they say, but there were others. And since there was a multitude of people there listening to teaching, many of them were, following them. [5:22] They were, they were in the broad sense, disciples of Jesus. I don't know what they're saying. They were part of that kind of larger designation of disciples. [5:34] And then there were many, many others as well. They were there. They were teaching. They were on the shoreline. They had many of them. They had been following him from place to place. And so, when Jesus gets the boat, he's launching out to the other side. [5:48] A lot of them followed. You know, in their own boats. So, you have a fleet of boats independently commanded and navigated, but all safely in the same direction. [6:01] As a kind of picture of that nation. And they're standing together in the same direction because of the presence of one man. And that man is Jesus. [6:13] Who, in our story, he is perhaps in a larger boat today than the back of the ship. Although, in the narrative, it says a little boat. So, maybe to make a distinction, Jesus is in a, probably a fishing boat. [6:28] The Lord's in the one. His apostles, his closest, his twelve are with him. His mothers. His, the other boats are following him, where he is going. [6:40] Now, you can picture that. Clear ships. Some large, some mean, some small. Probably most of them small. And, uh, in all the Jews, many of them who have been listening to Jesus' speech. [6:52] They, they are reporting anything that they quote and following Jesus to the outside of the city of Galilee. So, here is Galilee, like the Jews. [7:05] They can have a picture. For our church, you. This is a new picture, I think, of the present kingdom of God. [7:15] The manifestation of the present kingdom of God. The present kingdom of God resides in the heart of the believer. The urge to acknowledge Jesus as king, obey and honor him as king. [7:28] That's where the kingdom resides. But we would say in the larger context that it is represented by the church. The kingdom of God on this earth gives that kind of invisible sense or spiritual sense. [7:46] The true church. And we should make up of, what, thousands, tens of thousands of small, medium, large, some super large church bodies. [8:00] Don't all around the world. And, uh, kind of like these other ships that I mentioned here. Uh, my mom. Now, I'm a church. [8:10] Our church is one of the ships. After getting the picture, this is going to help us kind of set the stage for some principles that we can learn from the story as we kind of follow along with some pieces of this whole, our church. [8:27] So, we're, we're, we're, we're, we're one of the ships. And, and, and, and, and, and the ship is part of the, of the, of the fleet of ships whose ranking admiral is not the, I'm calling him, but he is the Lord Jesus Christ. [8:41] And we're following him. And so, we together, we're all we're in the ship. We're on a journey. And that journey is really the life and ministry of the church in this particular community of humanity that's home part. [8:58] That's how we all think it is. We can picture this. Now, looking then from here and forward, we can say some great and wondrous things are going to happen during our journey. [9:14] Don't you know what's up? Great, wondrous things. God is going to do some wonderful things in my life. In his church here, right? [9:27] Some unexpected things. Some unexplained things. Some, before now, unexperienced things. [9:40] And God is going to do this. He's going to show himself mighty. He's done it before. And he's going to do it again. Maybe. [9:52] Maybe. He's going to say, That's a good idea. Maybe. Well, there are some things the church doesn't do before they will experience the presence of God and the power of God. [10:11] The presence of God and the power of God are manifested in the church's ministries and in their corporate worship. There's some things that are supposed to be true. [10:22] That we can learn from this story. And so these things the church doesn't do, I think, are illustrated for us by this kind of leadership system. [10:35] Where the disciples and other followers are on board. On board. On board. We want all to stand on board. [10:45] And so by the way of this story, Mark 1, I want to stand on board. As we can say, we're going to see the presence and the power of God in our lives. [10:58] And this story, I think, is a lot of things that are also in our church. And this story, I think, has helped us discover. [11:09] In fact, it's 60. 60. And now, I'm going to be just going. That doesn't matter. It's going. [11:21] One, there's one tonight. Here it is. No, no alliteration. Okay. Oh, you've got to be kidding. Now I do. Here it is. [11:33] The church must willingly follow the Lord Jesus Christ. I feel like I was thinking something, you know, to be, yeah, something I did. [11:44] Something I didn't already know. I mean, I'm certain. But this is unbelievable. And nobody can get this point in the story if we make kind of a symbolism, a picture. [11:58] This small team of ships all following the leadership. Where the Lord Jesus is. And the church is on this planet. [12:13] Following Jesus. Hopefully. Those who are expecting to see God move. God work. God dress. God bless. God's purpose. [12:26] And so forth. Are those churches. That are willing to follow the Lord Jesus Christ. You're willing to follow Him. Now, look at the last phrase of the first verse. [12:39] Jesus says, let us cross over to the other side. Let's cross over to the other side, right? Let's start with it. Matthew, in his account of the same thing there. [12:52] Added this to the coming before the day. He said, when he was entered into the ship, his disciples followed. Followed. That's an adaptation of the Greek. [13:03] All right. So, you see. Any ship. Just think about it. It's logical. Any ship that can be a captain of the crucible to. [13:16] Can remain docked in the shore. Not sail. Is that one option? Certainly. Certainly. Or. [13:28] They could choose to steer. Her. Their ship. And on a different course. Than the one that was laid down by the high. Aqualine. He's going this way. [13:42] He can steer. This way. He can steer. That's one option. Another option. The ship's crew might abuse me against the captain. [13:53] The ship is going overboard. That's right. All right. That's happening. That's certainly one option. And so, you see. These things and more can happen to the ship. [14:05] It does not stay with the fleet. Or stay on board with Jesus. But now, remember. I'm not talking about sea vessels. That's just the illustration. We're talking here about the charity. [14:18] The church. Of which. These other ships are soon on. So the church. Can. If we're captain so chooses. [14:29] Can remain in dock. And not follow. Their. Their. Their. These ships. Not follow the Lord Jesus Christ. Can also. Can choose to steer. [14:42] In another camp. Of course. Contrary to the leadership of the high admiral. Have them. Your Lord. Those ship can't be used to be a catch. [14:53] They throw. Throw the. Cap row to the war. Or in this case. Now we're in the church. Throw the church. Have a basket row to the war. And if that does happen. I believe they. [15:05] Have had to pay. Oh I'm going to have to close. That's not a story. All those things can happen in the church, or they can steer in the direction and follow the Lord Jesus Christ. [15:23] They do that. Now, these other ships experience something that night. This is really the whole principle here. The other ships that follow Jesus experience something that night. [15:38] Jesus, over again, they experience the awesome, incredible power of God. [15:50] And you have to ask the question, how is that possible? Well, because they're the same. The message is simple answer. [16:01] They experience the power of God that day, and they didn't see. And they did so because of the power. Okay? And they were there. [16:12] Why? Because they love him. That's what it says. They experience God because they're there, and they're there. [16:25] They love him. So, for any church that's in Jesus, one of them might know, then, that church must be following Jesus. [16:38] That church must be there. Following us all to follow Jesus. And what does it mean for the church to follow Jesus? Here is where we make an adaptation. You may know the church that follows Jesus. [16:52] But, for you, this. For you, this is the church that is following Jesus so that they can be there when Jesus moves and works. The church that follows Jesus is committed to, number one, the message. [17:08] The word. Number one. Number two. Is man. Man. And number three. [17:19] Is the church. The recognition. Those three. And as I said, I'm so glad the important church is being. [17:33] He's all the best. And that's still the right. That's not always the case. It's not always the case. And the truth is not. So, pray through. [17:47] Let's just take these three. His message. The word. Now, if we're going to see God move. Work. Work out his purposes. [18:01] Bear fruit. All of a sudden. And see the power. then we must begin to dismiss the word of God. If a church is violating God's word, then listen to your people. [18:19] If a church violates God's word, then you're going to have a word. That applies to being different. [18:32] I mean, if you're not obeying God, or you're out of school, no matter how things may be going, and maybe things are even smooth in that person's life, that doesn't mean that that person is in the world. [18:48] So if you're not following these words, you're not in the field, and no amount of prayer about a non-liblical decision will be changed. No amount of prayer, or not a non-liblical decision will make it right to God. [19:07] So you see, it is the ultimate pride, really, for any believer, individually, or any group of believers, like the basis of the church, to say by their decisions, and actions, and I know this is contrary, the word of God, I want you to do it. [19:26] I want you to do it. Remember that, and the Bible, and remember that also, as the Bible, to the church. All right, so for a church to be here, and God has a great, wondrous, mighty thing, that is to follow Jesus. [19:45] And follow Jesus means, first of all, you can get into this message. This message, you are here. The house is making the two of you. I, I want you to know, I have met. [20:00] I've passed by the church. Never passed by the church. Like this. Where I have had, such a freedom. Which time is the word. [20:13] And to be a firm. In that. Oh Lord. Oh Lord. Oh Lord. I'm thankful thank you now it's not just enough to enjoy the preaching it doesn't allow it to sink in and change our lives that's what the challenge is for everyone else but it begins with a commitment and a reference for a special and a humble the solid teaching preaching about the beginning of the message thank you yes I am now we include this here because we want to keep our own or you know kind of strong arm you know to follow my leadership but it's a reality church is following [21:14] Jesus not what follows the message the father is a man the man of God and especially I want to show you the passage in my turn Hebrews chapter 10 verse 17 Hebrews chapter verse 17 and again I feel this language like this almost why it means somebody else I say this verse 17 obey those who rule over you can be submissive know or just don't lie and I think it's nice to be out of all of you here tonight I know some of you serve even long as this morning in the summer but anyway we've been going through the beach and last next night [22:23] I launched down to that has to be five out five students that has to be full and that is really tense what a tension coming from this issue so I would like to hear this in this but here comes verse to let those who rule over you and these who they watch for yourselves and those who must give count let them do so! [22:54] joy and that would be unprofitable for you so yeah which would you rather follow the leadership of your pastor and elders or would you rather hold them on your shoulders and you can't believe it okay after you you carry it and it's a great book in fact we have all these that is one is raise the barriers to carry the leadership and accountability responsibility all pastors need to be a church so it is man now no pastor has authority by the way it's a sermon kind of leadership but there is a law you need to be a pastor and no pastor has a boy because he's a citizen he doesn't deserve it and not because he's better than his congregation gosh and it's not because somehow pastor knows that absolutely not true but don't take care of everything I say as a pretty huge measure for yourself but I'm not the pastor and have that pastor authority against how I know more than you do and the more spiritual than you are or anybody else in the church that's not it at all it's not reading those reasons rather slowly because God in the summer today has placed his man pastor there in which you hear you saying that's why we hear saying 3-5 shender the flock let me read this in 1 [24:58] Peter chapter 5 the elders who are among you I have as serving as overseers not like compulsion but little not forced to get down through grudging grudging kind of mentality but not for dishonest gain but eager nor being lords and trust to do this gives into the whole of you divine and mission of the apostle of guard is not the Lord most pastors are operating very quite frankly it's my way and the highway you never followed me you you supposed to it you are [26:07] Lord a law but to be examples and when the chief shepherd shall receive the crown of glory I'm a pastor shepherd under shepherd of the chief of shepherd and the permissive works for Jesus Christ so unless I'm preaching heresy and I hope somebody tell me unless I'm preaching heresy or guilty of immorality or living under the best sin or have misqualified myself by violating the qualification let's attach to this whole in honest text there's a problem in respect the Lord to give your excuse and also you think well pastor there's this problem here while you're preaching this not at all in fact this is the opposite we're going to this first break and then we'll go on some others that are more applicable to maybe some of the things that are going on in our church right now since the chapter where [27:27] I don't have any trouble with this because I'm sick and thankful how no pastor is letting everybody wants it to be okay and because we get down to it God doesn't require me all that he wants to be he gets required for all he wants to you know there's some things that you know I would not very good at seriously and but God is a question and I thank you all so the church must be committed to God's message that's the word of God committed to God's man and God and then the mission God's mission of God and this is so absolutely critical for our church because no church can be following [28:35] Jesus and if at same time disobedience to the great mission and that applies to the organization and focus of the church but also to the commitment of the last thing Jesus said in his church before he left this world went to the right hand of the father from the father he said make disciples the last man gave make disciples that's part of the mission and 28 19 go therefore and make disciples make disciples that is the only imperative for the entire mission make disciples baptizing in the name of the father son or ghost teaching them to do all things that I command you and [29:36] I with you you you you did you that's the regulation the imperative is to make disciples by way that includes not just simply you know having discipleship it begins with bringing people Christ and the proclamation of the gospel and then includes baptizing them obedience to scripture it includes teaching them all the things that Jesus told us to observe that's discipleship that's discipleship in where we move from beginning all the way to the church is involved in obedience and commission great commission is the basis on which God blesses this church show me church that is not active at all in great commission and we have a church that may be great on the outside and they have all the people looking for and constitute from my perspective the success of the church is disempowered that what you know brand new bright candy apple red shepherd bay over there you can picture that like shepherd women out of what is it red oh that's good [31:18] I know the chrome trim that's kind of white fat shiny leather cherry and you know all that little cool though picture that our lip of the hood of the engine imagine that well that's like the great commission is the of the church it's the engine it without it we're not going I don't know anything we might look I like the lead for better maybe maybe if I had that not better but whatever car you like better it be kind of like that looks good it is young we might be doing some pretty impressive things but we're not we're kind of like [32:22] I'm not sports car everything is happening yes it does so what does it take to see the presence and power of God in the church well the church must will follow the leadership of the Lord Jesus Christ and that means he gives his message his word his man his leader his mission great mission now there are five word applications that I think are going to be very much timely where we are as a church right now five more principles to learn about how a church the church does do to see the presence and power of God Thank you.
