Preaching the Word (Part 1)

We'll open your Bibles this morning to 1 Peter and find verse 25 of 1 Peter chapter 1.

! 1 Peter chapter 1 and starting with verse 25. And I want to read through to verse 3 of chapter 2. All right.

But the word of the Lord endures forever. Now, this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you.

Therefore. Very key word there, by the way. Therefore. Laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, all evil speaking.

As newborn babes desire the pure milk of the word that you may grow thereby. If indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

Gracious. Isn't that a marvelous text? Now, let me give you kind of a heads up on what we're going to do this morning. Some of it depends on how quickly I can get through what I have prepared to preach.

A preacher is always at a quandary when he selects a text. At a quandary, just how deep he needs to go into it and how much time he needs to spend on it.

And as you've already noticed about your pastor, I spend a lot of time because I go really deep. And I think it's right to do that. This is God's word.

And it's exactly what God wants us to know. And it behooves us to dig as deep as possible to find out exactly what he means by what he says here.

And so I don't apologize for that. But the quandary is, of course, the time restraints. And I am aware that we do have those.

You may say, or at least some of you may say, well, preacher, just take as long as you want. But not everybody would be in agreement with that. Okay? Preach on.

I heard it. I don't know who said it. But I'm more inclined to do that. But here is the quandary. I'm not sure I'm going to make it all the way through.

So this is what we're going to do. It's based upon a plan that I have starting with next Sunday. If I don't get finished with these passages, then we'll finish it tonight.

And I hope that you're going to be here tonight. I hope it's your standard procedure on Sunday to worship with God's people on Sunday night. We do have a worship service on Sunday night.

You know that? As I would encourage you to be back tonight, whether we have to finish this passage in 1 Peter 1, or whether I continue to preach the next passage in Romans.

Either way, come and join us tonight and be a part of the worship and the preaching of God's Word. So I'll finish it this morning or tonight. And then next Sunday morning, here is a little crass commercialism.

Not really that. But a little heads up on next Sunday. I am going to take a break from 1 Peter. Give you a rest. That's another thing that some people need from time to time, especially with consecutive preaching through books of the Bible.

I think it's appropriate sometimes to take a break and deal with maybe a little series. And this is what I'm going to do. Next Sunday morning, we're going to look at John, the Gospel of John, and take a few Sundays to expound upon the great I Am statements of the Lord Jesus Christ in the Gospel of John.

That will give us a rest from 1 Peter. Not that we necessarily need it. Not everyone needs it. But it will give us a little break from that. But it's not going to be a rest in the sense that we're just going to rest our minds and kind of kick back and enjoy.

I hope you do enjoy the exposition of God's Word. But it will give us a rest in the sense that we'll look at something very, very, very significant.

As we consider the Lord Jesus Christ and His great I Am statements. And that will set us up to continue in 1 Peter chapter 2 as we focus on the Lord Jesus Christ.

And so that's what we're going to do. And so if I don't get on to it, we definitely will not finish what I plan to finish this morning. The subject this morning, as you probably could see for yourself, is going to be the Word of God.

And yet I have chosen to emphasize the preaching of it. And so this is a message this morning and maybe tonight that is going to emphasize the preaching.

Preaching of the Word of God. It would be a sermon that would fit very well in a seminary. That is, if I were preaching to preachers.

And you might think, well, we're not preachers. Well, you aren't maybe in the vocational sense. Some of you are. But it is important for us to know the significance of preaching.

Of preaching. And that will make more sense as we go along. But this is our subject tonight. And, or this morning and maybe tonight. Preaching the Word of God.

Preaching the Word of God. And specifically, what the preaching of God's Word represents for us. And secondly, what the preaching of God's Word requires of us.

And thirdly, what the preaching of God's Word realizes in us. Now, I want to emphasize something just to explain something on the front end.

It's not preaching, just plain preaching per se that accomplishes these three things. But rather, the preaching of God's Word.

That accomplishes these three things. Those are the main points of my sermon. Peter wrote in verse 25.

If you would look at that again, just to kind of introduce this, to set this up. Peter wrote in verse 25. The Word of the Lord endures forever. The Word of the Lord endures forever.

Now, this, he said. What he is writing in his letter. This. That is the Word of the Lord. This is the Word which was what?

Preached. Preached. Preached to you. You see, this is significant. We. And I'm going to emphasize and focus our attention this morning.

On this. This mode of. Of getting the Word out. Peter said. This is the Word. The Word of the Lord.

That was preached to you. Or in the New King James Version. And King James by the Gospel was preached. To you. Now, what's the next word?

You have to go on in to chapter 2. Therefore. Therefore. Therefore. And then Peter goes on with his instruction.

Peter gives his instructions. And so, I want to key in on the preaching of the Word. That's the subject. The subject is preaching. What it represents for us. What it requires of us.

Those who are hearing it. And what it realizes in us. That is. What it accomplishes. In our life. So, first of all then.

What the preaching of God's Word represents. For us. That is. For us. That is. Who are believers. For us who are.

Or have been born again. Preaching. You see. Preaching. Bible preaching. Biblical preaching. And I would say. Most certainly. Expositional.

Biblical preaching. Represents something. Significant. For us. Two things. And I think they're. They are both found right here in the text.

First of all. Biblical preaching. Represents. Something exclusive. I don't know if you've ever.

Considered this about. Preaching. About biblical preaching. Christian preaching. But it. Represents for us. Something exclusive. Something unique.

Have you ever wondered why. Is there such a thing as preaching? I mean why. Well don't we just simply gather. And have fellowship.

Gather and assemble here. Like we have this morning. And just sing. Why don't we. Why do we. Do more than that. Why don't we just. Come and assemble here.

And pray together. And we do all those things. Don't we. We do have fellowship together. As the body of Christ. Corporate fellowship together.

That is something that takes place. On Sunday mornings. And Sunday nights. In a Baptist church. And on Wednesday nights. We have fellowship with one another. We have something in common.

That is the Lord Jesus Christ. And we do fellowship when we gather together. We also sing. We worship the Lord. Through singing.

Because the words we're singing. Are hopefully flowing from our hearts. As we lift them up to the Lord. And some of our singing is designed to encourage one another.

To exhort one another. To lift up our praises to the Lord. And that is a very key part of our assembling together. On Sunday mornings and Sunday nights.

To sing. Sing our praises. Not worship. We also get together to pray. We do pray together. So is.

Why is that not enough? Why do we have to have preaching? Probably there are some who. Really do want an answer to that question. Sadly.

Though I am musing just a little bit with that. Maybe some of the younger generation. Maybe some of the kids. You know. Might have that question. Why do we preach?

Why do we have preaching? And yet it is a valid question. And I think it's a question. That we ought to give some thought to. And a question that we ought to arrive.

A question. A question that needs an answer. We need to arrive at an answer. Well did you know. That preaching is.

Uniquely. Christian. Christian. Did you know that? That what I'm doing here this morning. And what other pastors. That is.

Those who are of New Testament churches. Pastoring New Testament churches. And who are opening the word of God. And expounding the meaning of God's word. What those pastors are doing. What I'm doing this morning.

Is something unique. To Christianity. Christianity. I don't know if you've ever considered that. And maybe you're thinking about that right now. I'm wondering if that's true. Well.

I'm telling you. That it's something unique. You see. We tend to lump. Preaching. Together. Together. With every other form of public address. And so. We might say.

Well. The only difference. Between what the preacher does. On Sunday morning. And say. What the congressman does. On Monday mornings. The only difference there. Is the subject matter. And.

In the religious sense. Or the religious context. What the Muslim. Imam. Does. And what the Buddhist priest. Does. And what the Mormon. Preacher does.

As well as all other. Religious speakers. Is no different. Really. Than what the Christian preacher does. They are just simply. All proclaiming the truth. As they understand it. As they see it.

You ever wondered. If that's true. I would say to you. That those who believe that. Do not really know. What Christian preaching is.

I just. Really believe. That this is. The first time. Most of you. Have ever considered. The uniqueness.

Of Christian preaching. It's unique. It stands alone. Let me give you then. A theology. Of preaching. Do we need.

A theology. Of preaching. I think we do. I assure you. That this pastor. Who stands. Before you. Had to come. Had to come. To a place.

In his life. Where he. Embraced. A theology. Of preaching. One that's based upon. Upon.

Scripture. Any theology. That is not. Based upon. Scripture. Is not. True theology. I came to a place. Where I understood.

A theology. Of preaching. And so. I want to give. That to you. This morning. And possibly. When I'm finished. You're going to think. A little differently. About.

Preaching. The significance. Of preaching. Or at the very least. We're going to all understand. I hope. How exclusive. How unique. Christian preaching. Is from all other.

Religious. And secular. Forms. Of public speaking. In the first place. Christian preaching. Is exclusive.

Because. God. Has. Spoken. That's where we need to begin. With our.

Theology. Of preaching. I preach. First and foremost. Because God has spoken. You understand. God has spoken.

And that's the primary idea. Behind the phrase. In verse 25. The word. Of the Lord. The word. Of the Lord. The idea. There.

Is not to. Segregate out. Some portion. Of scripture. What. Peter. Is referring to. Is the whole. Of scripture. But he is just. Referring to it. In a different.

Kind of way. He's. He's. Referring to the. Spoken. Word. By the way. That's what we have here. We'll. Get to that. A little bit later. But he's talking.

About the. Spoken. The word. Of the Lord. Endures. Forever. It's the spoken word. And. This is astounding. Because a careful.

Perusal. Of the Bible. Reveals. A staggering. Number. Of references. To this. Divine. Activity. Of God. That is his.

Self-revelation. Beginning. In first. In Genesis. Chapter one. Where it says. God said. Let there be light. And ending. In Revelation. Chapter 22.

When God says. Surely. I come. Soon. And all points. In between. I tell you. Dear people. That the Bible. Contains. A near. Endless.

Testimony. Of God's. Self-disclosure. Of his. Person. And his. Plan. That's what we have. Right here. God has. Spoken. And then. When you get on.

Into the New Testament. By the way. In the Old Testament. The Lord said. The Lord. Spoke. The word. Of the Lord. Came. Appear. In the Old Testament.

Over. Thirty. Eight. Hundred. Times. And then. When you get into. The New Testament. We have. God incarnate. The Lord. Jesus Christ. Speaking. Face. To face.

With man. I think. Hebrews. Chapter 1. And verse 1. Represents. The definitive. Statement. On this subject. Where.

The Bible. Says. Long ago. At. Many times. And. In. Many ways. God.

Spoke. That's what's said. God. Spoke. Spoke. To our fathers. By the prophets. But. In these last days. He has.

Spoken. There's that word again. Spoken. To us. By. His son. The Lord. Jesus Christ. Now. Listen to me. This is. Key. To understanding. Christian. Preaching.

That is. In regard. To his. Exclusivity. Christianity. stands. Upon. This. Foundational. Affirmation. Of scripture. That God. Has. Spoken.

In fact. I would say. To you. That hope. Itself. Hope. Itself. Is rooted. In this reality. One great theologian.

Put it. Had God. Remain. Silent. And shrouded. In thick. Darkness. The plight. Of mankind. Would have been. Desperate. Indeed. See.

Listen. From mankind's. Position. Everything. Everything. Everything. Depended. Upon God.

Speaking. Everything. Depended. Upon God's. Self. Revelation. Of his. Person. And his. Plan. And the. Grim. Reality. Is. Had God.

Remained. Silent. There. Would have been. No promises. No covenant. To secure us. No story.

To tell. To the nations. No law. To live by. No prophecy. To hope in. There would have been. No wise saying. To counsel us. No apocalyptic.

That is. No. Word. About the future. If God. Had remained silent. And worse than that. Really. There would have been. No possibility. For man.

To know God. If God. Had remained silent. The apostle Paul. Told us that. He said. In Romans. Chapter 11.

Verse 33. Oh. The depth. Of the riches. Both. Of the wisdom. And knowledge. Of God. How unsearchable. Are his judgments. How unfathomable.

His. Ways. King James. Puts it. His ways. Are past. Finding out. One theologian. Asked the question.

Canst. Thou. By seeking. Find out. God. And to man's. Proud. Not yet. The Bible. Says. Not ever. Not ever.

Thankfully. God. Took the initiative. He spoke. In the creation. Of all things. He. He. Revealed. His.

Person. And his. Plan. To his. Prophets. And he. Through. The incarnation. Of his. Son. Spoke. His. Final. Word.

To us. Through his. Son. Jesus. And so. We're considering. What preaching. Represents. For us. We're talking. About a theology. Of preaching.

And I'm trying. To help you. Figure out. Why this knucklehead. Stands up here. Every Sunday morning. And Sunday night. And why we have. Preaching. It represents.

Something. Exclusive. Christian preaching. Is exclusive. It is unique. Among all. Other. Religious. And secular. Forms. Of public speaking.

First of all. Because God has. Spoken. God has spoken. And. That is. I preach. Because. God has spoken. But how do I know.

What he has said. How do I know. What to preach. Let's think about that. For a minute. That question. The answer.

Is very obvious. But. Again. I'm trying to. Help us. Move. In our thought. Processes. To understand. The significance. Of Christian preaching.

And why we have. The preaching. Of God's word. And so. If God has spoken. And that's why. I preach. Then how do I know. What he has. Said. How do I know.

What to preach. And better yet. How do you know. That what I preach. Is true. You know the answer. But what I'm trying. The point. I'm trying to make. Is we do not believe.

In open revelation. That somehow. God is still speaking. Separate from scripture. And so.

Your pastor. Does not stand here. Every Sunday morning. And Sunday night. And on Wednesday nights. With some fresh new revelation. From God.

And so. You need to understand. That preaching. Is not some. Esoteric. Gnostic. Or mystical form. Of communication. Not at all.

And so. First of all. I preach. Because God has spoken. But second. Now get this. I preach. Because. It is written. Whereas the ground.

Of preaching. That is. Christian preaching. Exists. And springs. From this reality. That God has spoken. The. Source. Of preaching.

Is. It is written. It is written. What God has spoken. He had written down. And it's right here.

Between these two black covers. And the index. And the maps. And all those other things. The word of God. I preach. Because.

It is. Written. So Christian preaching. Is exclusive. Because of the source. Of the preaching. It's God's word. Written.

Down. That's the source. Of preaching. The very. Words. Of God. I want you to notice. Something in verse 25. The word. Of the Lord. Endures forever.

That's what Peter wrote there. The word. Of the Lord. Endures. Forever. Now as I've said. This is a reference. To the spoken word. He's highlighting. The reality. That reality.

The spoken word. That God has spoken. But Peter goes on from there. And he says. Now. This is the word. Do you see that there? Look. Look at your Bibles. This is the word.

At least in this translation. It says. Which by the gospel. Was preached. To you. And yet. In both places. We have. The word. Word. The word.

Word. Okay. Now the Greek word. Translated word. In both instances. Is not the word. Lagos. Which is more common.

That appears. That word appears. Earlier in verse 23. But here. In verse 25. It is. Rhema. Is that important?

Well. The word. Rhema. Means. That which is spoken. That which is spoken. Or. Uttered. Uttered in speech.

Or writing. Or writing. Now. Again. Peter is not. Trying to. Segregate out of our Bibles. Some part that's more important.

That is. He's not. Just saying. You know. It's just that part. In the Old Testament. Where it specifically. Says God spoke. Or God said. Or God is saying. And it's not just the. The.

The. Portion. In the New Testament. Where it's in red ink. You're not trying to. To. To. Differentiate. Between. The Lagos. The word of God.

And the. Rhema. The word of God. But the emphasis. Here. Again. Is on. Something spoken. And something. Written.

Written. In one sense. We might. Put this. Straight in our minds. Lagos. Word. Emphasizes. The. Speaker.

But here. Rhema. Is. Emphasizing. The message. Itself. The message. Itself. The very. Words. Spoken.

And. Later. Written. And. These are the words. Peter says. The word of the Lord. Which was. Preached. To you. You see. The hallmark.

Of the Old Testament. Is this. Statement. The Lord says. The hallmark. Of the New Testament. Is this statement. It is written. And you'll find it. Sixty. Seven.

Times. In the New Testament. And so. I preach. Because God has spoken. And I preach. Because what God said. He had written down. He had written down.

The Bible. From cover to cover. Represents. Then. The very. Words. Of God. That's why I believe. In the verbal. Inspiration.

In scripture. The verbal. Inspiration. That is. Not just the thoughts. Are inspired. And not just. Parts. Are inspired. But the very. Words. Are inspired.

Though. Written by men. As they were inspired. By God. And led. And born along. By God. Though written by men. Over. Several centuries. They are.

The end result. Are the very. Words. Of God. The very. Words. Of God. Written down. Aren't you glad. That they were written down.

I tell you. I am. I'm the guy. That has to get up here. And preach. Every Sunday. And I sit in my. Study. Monday. Monday. Through. Thursday.

Sometimes Friday. Sometimes Saturday. Prayerfully. Putting together. What I'm going to preach. On Sunday.

What a. Chore. That would be. To have to dream up. Something on my own. To try to. Pray and sense. What God might be saying. Today. Directly to me.

I don't have to do that. Just like preaching. Is not some. Mystical activity. Preparation for preaching. It also. Is not a mystical thing. Because I have everything.

God has said. Right here. Right here. My job. Is to find out. What. He has said. And what it means. That's why I believe.

In expository. Preaching. Expository. Preaching. Just means to expose. What God has said. To expose it.

The meaning of it. And to apply it. Apply it in a way. That's consistent. With. What the author. Intended to say. How important it is.

To preach expository. And so what we're talking about here. Is the very foundation. The very. Building of a theology. Of preaching. I preach. Because God has spoken.

There isn't any other religion. No other. Cult. That can say. What we say.

That God. The one God. The creator. Of all the universe. The one great. I am. The Yahweh God. Has actually. Spoken. And no other religion.

Can say. That exactly. What God has spoken. Has been put down. In print. As some can claim that. And I. Am aware of the fact.

That some do claim that. Christianity. Is the only one. Where that claim is true. It is written.

And I preach. Because it is written. I preach. The very words. Of God. Because. That's what's contained. Right here. In this book. The very words. Of God. Are right here.

In this book. That not only. Causes us. To approach. The word of God. A little bit differently. But it also. Ought to. Change. The way we. Look. At preaching. It's.

The word of God. Being. The very words. Of God. Samuel Clement. Or. Mark Twain. Attended church.

On one Sunday. As the story goes. And afterward. He met the pastor. At the door. And he said. To the pastor. He said. You know. I have a book. At home. That has every word.

You preach. This morning. And the pastor. Was kind of shocked. And he assured. Samuel Clement. That his sermon. Was original. And yet. Clement. Still persisted.

I've got a book. At home. That has every word. You. You preach. This morning. In your sermon. Every word. And the pastor. Said. Well. I'd like to have that book. And so.

On Monday morning. He. Received. A parcel. And after he unwrapped. The package. Inside the package. Was a dictionary. And in the fly leaf.

Were these words. Words. Just words. Just words. Testimony.

Of Samuel. Clements. Faith. Not a Christian. And to him. As he listened. To that. Preacher. Preach. They were just. Words. To him. And he had a dictionary.

At the house. That had all those. Words. In it. Preaching. However. Biblical. Preaching. Is exclusively.

Christian. Because. The words. Are. God's. Words. There's one other thing. That marks.

The exclusive nature. Of preaching. There is the ground. Of preaching. I say. The very foundation. Of it. It springs. From this ground.

Like. Like a beautiful flower. Springs. From the soil. The ground. Of preaching. Is God. Has spoken. In many ways.

And many times. God. Spoken. The source. Then. Of preaching. Is. This phrase.

It is written. It is written. Third. I preach. Because of the. Mandate.

Of preaching. And. This phrase. Preach. The word.

Preach. The word. Apostle Paul. Revealed. The mandate. Of preaching. When he wrote. To a young preacher. By the name. Of Timothy. And he gave.

This young preacher. Timothy. A command. In. Second. Timothy. Four. Two. And the command. Was. Preach.

The word. There's the command. Preach. The word. Preach. It. See. I don't care. What a. Growing. Number. Of people. In our. Post.

Modern. World. Are saying. Biblical. Preaching. Has not. Become. Pass. Is not. Out. Of style.

It. Is not. Old. Fashion. It's not. Something. That ought. To fall. By the. Wayside. Because. It's. Outdated. If.

The Bible. Listen. If. The Bible. Is. What. It. Is. What. Is. It. The very. Words.

Of. God. Written. Down. By. Divinely. Inspired. Men. That's. Short. Answer. About. What. This. Book. Is. If. The Bible. Is. That. Then.

All. True. Proclamation. Of. It. Must. Take. The form. Of. Preaching. Preaching. Is. Not.

Out. Of. Style. If. You. Look. At. Verse. Twenty. Five. One. More. Time. But. The word. Of. The. Lord. Endures. Forever. Now.

This. Is. The. Word. Which. By. The. Gospel. Was. Preached. To. You. You. You. Have. Different. Translations. Out. There. Different. Versions.

Of. The. Bible. And. Some. Of. Yours. May. Read. Differently. The. New. King. James. Version. Is. Simply. Translating. Giving. A. Full. Translation.

Translation. This. Is. The. Word. That. Was. Gospel. Preached. Gospel. Preached. That's. Little. Awkward. And. Yet.

And. Yet. That's. What. It. Means. By. The. Gospel. Was. Preached. By. The. Gospel. Was. Preached. By. The. Good. News. Was. Preached. You. See. God. Spoke. His. Message. To.

Man. His. Ewing. Galeon. Elect. Men.

Leading. Them. To. Write. Down. His. Message. And. He. Moved. Them. He. Bore. Them. Along. In. Life.

For. Us. Something. Exclusive. Something. Unique. From. All. Other. Forms. Of. Religious. And. Secular. Public. Speaking. Because. Unlike. Any. Of. Them.

Preaching. Springs. From. The. Awesome. Reality. That. God. Has. Spoken. And. He. Had. It. Written. Down. And. We. Must. Preach. It. Must. Preach. It. From.

The. Mountaintops. Preach. It. Around. The. World. Now. There. Is. A. Second. Thing. Preaching. Represents. For. Us. For.

Us. Biblical. Preaching. Represents. Something. Transformative. Transformative.

That's not the act of preaching itself. That accomplishes transformation in the lives of people. It is what's preached obviously. I could get up here and preach persuasively from the Koran.

And your life would not be transformed. Not in the right way. Not in a spiritual way. So it is the word of God that's the focus here. But it is the proclaiming.

The preaching of God's word. That. That is. Transformative. Because God is. Is pleased. To bless.

Through the foolishness of the act of preaching. Verse. 23. Back up a little bit.

See. Something about this. Verse 23. Having been. Born. Again. Not of corruptible seed.

But incorruptible. Through what? The word of God. Which lives and abides forever. It's that same word.

That. He mentions in verse 25. The word of the Lord. That endures forever. Forever. And it's that same word. That. Is mentioned in verse 25.

The latter part of verse 25. The word. Which by the gospel. Is preached. To you. It's preached. It's.
