We are, though, actually to the third and final main point of my teaching lesson, the humbling! significance of Daniel's visions. The humbling significance, and there's a whole! significance here.
That's what we're going to look at tonight, and I'm going to defer reading that portion of the chapter, which is Daniel 7, verses 15 through 28, so a good half of the chapter.
And really, it's pretty thrilling when you read it, and I think you'll agree as we kind of walk our way through it. Daniel has had his vision, and there is some debate as to whether what comes next here is still a part of the vision. That is, he's asking someone who is there. You know, what's the meaning of this? What's the truth of this? And then the truth is revealed by this one standing there. We'll get to that here in a little bit.
So, you know, this is probably still part of the vision, and I'll make that clear, the reason why I think that clear when we get to that portion of the chapter. And so it's going to be thrilling, and yet, at the same time, it's very troubling to Daniel. You know, we have one benefit, a big benefit, and that is we kind of know more than Daniel knew when he saw this vision. We have the completed Word of God, and Daniel did not have that. And so we have much more prophetic material in Scripture that Daniel did not have, and so we can almost interpret the dream for him, not because we have any power to interpret dreams, but because we have the Scriptures. So we're familiar with it.
But, all right, so it's thrilling to us to kind of look at this and make connections between the vision that Daniel had and the things that we know about future coming events and the excitement of that and the wonder of all of that. But again, to Daniel, it was troubling, and ultimately, it was humbling.
And so we're going to look at that tonight. Some of this is going to be kind of repetitious because about every step of the way so far, I have been making connections with meaning and with future events and other Scriptures. And so in this portion of the study, this is where we can really make these connections between the vision and future events. Well, some past, but ultimately, events that have yet to take place. All right, so first of all then, or A, we want to notice Daniel's perplexed request. All right, so he makes a perplexed request. And as I've already noted, after Daniel got over the initial shock of the vision, it was then disturbed. And you would be too, right? I mean, to see these beasts come out of the sea, especially that fourth one. So it's very shocking, very troubling, even horrifying, even scary. And so now he's perplexed by this all. He wants to know all of it. He wants to know the meaning of it. In fact, he's distressed. So that's the first thing I want you to see under this Daniel's perplexed request, his distress. Verse 15 says,
I, Daniel, was grieved. Now that's how it's translated in the New King James. It really is a word that means distressed. In fact, I think maybe the New American Standard even translates it that way.
So Daniel's saying, I was distressed. This is after he saw the vision, all these beasts and so forth, in the Ancient of Days and all that. I was distressed in my spirit, within my body, he said in verse 15, and the visions of my head or my mind literally troubled me. All right, now why? Well, you know, I think we could imagine a number of valid reasons why. Having already studied the vision itself, I mean, the strangeness of the vision, the unanswered questions he naturally would have, and you would have, we would all have. Daniel had not yet been given a full, the full importance of the vision. In fact, even after he speaks to this one standing by, he doesn't get all of it. In fact, we know more about it than Daniel even knew it. And, but so he hasn't been given, you know, all the importance of this and the truth of this. And so he had a number of troubling questions. So he's distressed, you know, not sure if he's going to get answers for these things. He's seen this vision. What is all this about? It's strange. What does it mean? What's the truth of it? You know, what's the significance of it for my life? I mean, he's already, you know, in his life interpreted dreams. He interpreted
Nebuchadnezzar's dream. So he understands the feeling inside, just as Nebuchadnezzar felt, this feeling of being perplexed and distressed because of what he has seen in the dream. All right, so his distress, and that then leads to his desire. That's number two, his desire. Verse 16, the first part of it, I came near to one of those who stood by. Now the question is, a couple questions really, where was this one who stood by? Where was he? Was he part of the vision?
Or was he standing near Daniel when he awoke from his dream or vision? I think that'd be kind of scary. I mean, you have this weird dream. You wake up and there's somebody standing there, you know, even worse. Well, actually, I think it's, it is in the vision. So he's still having a vision.
The most more important question is, who was this one who stood by? All right. Where was he? That, that might be important, but who was he? In my mind, as I read the passage, that's what I want to know. Who is this person? Well, you know, we can't really answer the, that first question, the where, we can't really answer that question definitively. And I would suggest that it really doesn't matter where he was. Personally, I think he was in the vision. I think this is still part of the vision.
Verse 10 speaks of a thousand thousands ministering to the ancient of days. Remember back there in verse 10, 10,000 times 10,000 standing before him. I think that may help us in identifying this one who stood by, who, who, who he was. I think he's most likely an angel, an angel. Now in the Bible, angels often interpreted visions for mortals. Now the fact that Daniel, by the way, the fact that Daniel was seeing this in the vision doesn't make that angel, you know, a fictitious type of dreamy type of person in there. The angel really existed and he's, he is in his vision. In fact, Daniel is seeing a vision of things that are real. All right. It's not, you know, that's what, why we maybe should define this more vision than a dream. You know, dreams usually are of things that aren't real.
They're kind of dreamy things. And so sometimes they're outlandish and weird. But visions can have both those things. And when Daniel had a vision of the ancient of days and the throne and throne set up in the thousands of thousands and tens of thousands, uh, ministering to the ancient of days, that's a very real thing. He saw that God allowed him to see that. And so this is one of the angels who's standing, uh, there, uh, uh, one of those who stood by one of those, one of thousands, uh, upon thousands, countless number standing there. And, and so I get back to the point that I wanted to make in the Bible.
Angels often interpret visions for mortals. And there are a number of examples. I'll just cite one and it's here in Daniel. Daniel had his famous vision of the 70 weeks, which we'll get to, uh, eventually. And, uh, the Bible says in Daniel chapter nine, verse 21, while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, actually the man type person, it's, it's an angel, angel Gabriel.
The archangel Gabriel, he said, Oh, Daniel, I have now come forth to give you skill to understand. So it is an angel that's interpreting. There are other examples, not only in Daniel, but in some other, uh, other prophets as well as in revelation. So I think this was, uh, the angel Gabriel that is interpreting about to interpret, uh, the dream or vision for Daniel.
So look, when you look at the rest of verse 16, verse 16 B, and I asked him, asked him the truth of all this. I believe Daniel desired to know several truths about the vision. He wanted to know, first of all, the what of the vision, the what of the vision, though it was not revealed to him the full importance of the vision. Daniel did understand that the vision portrayed a violent overthrow of governments and extreme chaos, uh, all around the world. The vision certainly suggested that. And so he wants to know the what of all of that. And no doubt he also wanted to know the when, the when of the vision. Daniel, you know, he could not help but be troubled and we would be troubled about not only the what of all of this, but when's this going to take place? When is this going to happen, uh, in, in the world? We need to remember, by the way, that, uh, this vision came to Daniel according to verse one of the chapter in the first year of Belshazzar, king of Babylon. So Babylon, the empire Babylon still exists at this point when he's having this vision. So, and Babylon is the first of the beasts.
All right. So we haven't yet come to the second beast and certainly not the third or fourth. And Daniel would never see the third or fourth. But when Daniel had this vision, he was still living in the time of the first beast, which was the Babylonian empire, represent the Babylonian empire.
And so Daniel wanted to know when would the second beast come? When would that happen? Which was the Persian empire. And Daniel, of course, did live to see that really very shortly after this vision because Belshazzar was the last king of the Babylonian empire. And Daniel saw that kingdom fall along with its king. And, uh, and so then income the Persians and the Medes, Medes and the Persians.
And Daniel lived to see that empire. And then you want to know when the third beast would come, which we all know was the Greek empire. And when would the fourth beast come, which we all know was the Roman empire. Now that's just historical. And, uh, all right. So, and also to know when would that fourth beast or fourth empire be destroyed? So I think, you know, Daniel wants to know the when of all of these things. And Daniel, I would say, wanted to know the where, where of the vision, where all these things going to take place and how will it affect me? Uh, more importantly, how will, uh, how will this affect the, my beloved nation Israel? Uh, these, these are things that have to be rolling around in, in, uh, uh, Daniel's mind. Uh, and he's concerned about these things, the what, the when, the where, and I would even add the who, the who of the vision. Uh, that might even be number one in our minds.
Who is this fourth empire, uh, different from the others? I mean, all he saw was this grotesque beast that, uh, really could not be described by any known animal in the world. And, uh, and so he would want to know who is this fourth empire that's different from the others, more powerful than the others and so forth. And then who is this little horn? All right. So he wants to know the who, you know, that this horn is rising up and it has eyes and mouth. There it speaks and it speaks blasphemies against God and, and then ultimately receives God's divine judgment and so forth. Who is that?
And, uh, that's what Daniel would want to know. Well, Daniel's not going to get all of his questions answered. In fact, uh, we're going to try to answer all those questions as we move through, uh, the angels interpretation. And we can only come up with those answers because of other scriptures.
Uh, but Daniel's not going to get all of that. Um, and, uh, just like we don't always get all of our questions answered, uh, you know, when it comes to, uh, what's going on in the world and so forth.
All right. So here's the second thing. First, Daniel's perplexed request. And now B, Daniel's prophetic revelation. Daniel says that the angel Gabriel in verse 16, latter part of verse 16, made known to me the interpretation of these things. All right. So the angel Gabriel made known these things. All right.
So here comes it, you know, the interpretation. And so here's what God's messenger, again, I believe the archangel Gabriel told Daniel. Number one, he gave him an overview, an overview of the five kingdoms, four of them passing, four passing kingdoms. You might've been taken aback when I said five kingdoms.
We'll get to that. Four of them are passing kingdoms. I mean, you can't deny when you read through the passage that there are five kingdoms in this chapter. Four of them are passing. They're passing. Verse 17, those great beasts, which are four, are four kings, which arise out of the earth. And that's a key, key, uh, statement there. So they represent men. These king, these beasts represent men, human men, flesh and blood people who of course are rulers or kings of kingdoms. Uh, they represent kingdoms and they are earthly. They arise out of the earth. And therefore they are temporary. Okay. Anything arises out of the earth is temporary. And again, we know the names of these kingdoms, uh, in humanity of the earth, Babylonian empire, Persian, Grecian, Roman. Then there's one permanent kingdom, uh, here, uh, in, in these, uh, in this chapter, uh, in this chapter, verse 18, but the saints of the most high shall receive the kingdom.
That's a different kingdom. That's not Babylonian, Persian, Grecian, Roman. It's not even a fifth kingdom that has come up out of the earth to destroy the Roman empire. You know, it, you know, as, as, as regard to some, you know, successive kingdom, this is a different kingdom. So there is a kingdom. And, uh, so they shall receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever, even forever and ever. All right. Now who are the saints? Uh, some, uh, word actually, uh, uh, means holy ones.
Well, uh, there would of course be different, differing opinions from some scholars, but I believe clearly the saints are the redeemed, uh, the bride of Christ, uh, the church of the living Lord Jesus, the most high. We don't have to guess who that is. That's God, God himself. The most high is God himself from the word Elyon, which is interestingly enough in the plural form. Uh, uh, interesting. And that's, uh, happens quite a lot in scripture when, uh, the name of God is used, various names, really more titles than names. These are titles or descriptions of God. God's name is Yahweh. Uh, but Elyon is description of God. We often think of it as a name for God, the most high God.
And, uh, but it's in, in the plural form. Uh, I think there's an allusion to the Trinity. The kingdom is the millennial kingdom of Jesus Christ, the millennial kingdom. The saints shall receive and possess possess the kingdom means we shall reign with him in that kingdom. And this kingdom is permanent forever, even forever and ever, which is an interesting phrase in the Hebrew text.
Did I give you the literal meaning there? Uh, you write this down. This is, this is how you would literally translate this to the forever and to the forever of forevers. I mean, that's expressed in the most emphatic way possible. I mean, even to, to read it as it is literally written, it's, it's kind of strange to the forever and to the forever of forevers. So there's forever. And then there's the forever of forever. So whatever that means, that's just a way to emphasize, uh, the eternal nature of this kingdom, uh, which by the way has led some to argue that this kingdom here in Daniel seven cannot be the millennial kingdom because millennial means 1000. All right. And so there are those who don't believe in a literal millennium millennial reign of Christ. And this is one passage they would refer to. Uh, but, uh, we, we need to understand that the kingdom, the idea here is when you talk about the kingdom of God, the kingdom cannot be confined by a millennium. So we're not to think that it just lasts for a thousand years and then, and then it's over. That's it, you know, but it's, it's described here in its initial stage, really technically in the second stage of the kingdom.
We're in the present stage of the kingdom, but in the second stage, it would be a thousand years and it's confined by a thousand years, but the kingdom itself is not confined by it. It simply begins on this earth, lasting a thousand years and then merges with the eternal state, the new heaven and new earth is the idea. Uh, one theologian, uh, R.L. Saucy, um, written a number of books. He is, uh, very decidedly a dispensationalist, but he said the millennium is necessary as a temporary interval between the present initial phase of the kingdom. And that's right now, whereas the kingdom reside, it resides in the heart of the believer. The rule and reign of Christ resides right here. It doesn't reside technically in the church because there are many churches where Christ does not rule or reign, uh, and he doesn't rule and reign as he will one day. But the kingdom in the present, its present, uh, state, initial phase is in the heart. So the millennium is a necessary interval between the present initial phase of the kingdom and its final consummation in heaven. Uh, I think that's putting it quite well. So the fact that there is a millennium doesn't mean the kingdom is combined by 1,000 years. It is a phase of the kingdom. Uh, the kingdom is eternal. It is forever, uh, to the forever of forevers. All right. Number two, details, the details of the fourth kingdom.
Daniel requests the truth about the fourth beast. All right. So kind of, you can think of it, you have some initial details. The angel kind of gives him a, you know, few, few things about the vision, but Daniel wants to know more and specifically about the fourth beast. So verse 19 says, then I wish to know the truth about the fourth beast. We might put it this way. Uh, okay. That's really awesome and incredible. Now tell me more about this fourth beast.
And we don't have to wonder why he would want to know that. And so Daniel, you know, with his request, he recites the details of what the beast looked like and his reason for wanting to know the truth about it. And so verse 19, the second part of it, it was different from all the others. All right.
That's the reason why you want to know a little bit more about this different from all the others. It was exceedingly dreadful. All right. So tell me more about this thing. It had teeth of iron and nails of bronze. By the way, the nails of bronze, uh, I mean, it's on, on his feet, the kind of claws on the feet. That wasn't, uh, something that Daniel told us about when he first recites the dream. So this is kind of added information. Uh, it devoured broken pieces, trampled the residue.
It had horns on its head. It had a horn, which came up before which three fell. It had eyes and a mouth, which spoke pompous words. It made war against the saints and prevailed against them. It was judged when the ancient of days came, uh, all those details. He just kind of, kind of recites the details of what he saw, which gives the reason why he wants to know the truth about this. What, why, why he wants to know more about it. And so Daniel recites the angel, everything he observed about the fourth beast.
And so Daniel receives the meaning of the fourth beast. He receives the meaning of it. Verse 23, thus he, that is the angel said, the fourth beast shall be. And then the angel gives Daniel, first of all, the meaning of the fourth beast, the meaning of it, the meaning of the fourth, fourth beast. Verse 23, thus he said, the fourth beast shall be a fourth kingdom on earth, which shall be different from all other kingdoms and shall devour the whole earth, trample it, and break it in pieces. All right. James said, I want to know more about it. He gets more information about it. And the angel gives the meaning of the fourth beast. So the fourth kingdom, uh, and we've mentioned this before, was, because there's a sense in which it was, but there's also sense in which it is, was, is, as we know from history, the Roman empire, the fourth kingdom, the Roman empire, it was different from all preceding kingdoms, different in power, had much more power than any of the preceding kingdoms, great power, the Roman empire, different in its size, its size and its, its territory, uh, basically encompassed all the civilized world. Different in wealth, different in influence, highly influential. And lastly, different, different, completely different in duration, duration. That is how long it lasted.
It, it, it, it was never completely conquered. Remember, I keep stressing that. You say, well, there's no Roman empire now. Well, there is the Catholic church. All right. Now, that doesn't mean that they are conquering worlds, you know, nations right now. Some might say that they are, but different way. But the Roman empire never was a conquered nation. It just became Christianized and it still exists today. And what Daniel is seeing is the revival of the Roman empire.
In that part of the world where the Roman empire existed, the very territory where the original Roman empire existed in Europe and Eastern Europe. All right. So then we get to the second or a second to the meaning of the 10 horns. Verse 24, the 10 horns are 10 Kings who shall arise from this kingdom, which is the fourth kingdom. So there, there are 10 Kings, aren't we know that already? Don't we?
So these 10 Kings understand they are not succeeding rulers of M or of empires to rise to power one after another. So we don't have, you know, the first beast conquered by the second beast conquered by the third beast conquered by the fourth beast. And then 10 successive Kings conquering and conquering and conquering. That's not the idea. You have 10 Kings who make up this fourth beast, 10 nations that perhaps that initially were separate nations, but come together to form a Confederacy or an, an, an, empire in a sense, though we may use different words today. That's the idea here. So these, these Kings exist together. All right. And so they rule contemporaneously as one empire.
Now that doesn't exist today. Not yet. We may, may think that we see some of the beginnings of it possibly, and there are a lot of people who think they see that and maybe they're right.
Revelation 17, 12, John saw a similar vision, didn't he? He, this is what he saw. The 10 horns, which you saw are 10 Kings who have received no kingdom as yet are so they exist, but they're not yet Confederates, not, not yet a nation, but they receive authority for one hour as Kings with the beast. We're not going to get into all the details here. Revelation 17, the symbolism here, but here's the idea. Here's the thing that's important. These are one mind and they will give their power and authority to the beast. I'll go ahead and tell you, but we'll get to it. The beast is that, that little horn that came to power and that Daniel saw in his vision. All right. So these 10 Kings will arise out of the old Roman Empire or that, whether it's just talking about geographically or if it's, you know, talking about, uh, even in the spiritual sense and they will form a new phase, a brand new phase of the old empire. Uh, uh, and, uh, at the end of the age, and this is going to happen at the end near the end because then that, that will all come to an end when Christ comes second time. So we're talking about something that's future for us may not be all that far out in the future, but who knows? Uh, someone has said that the shadow of this coming union lies across Western
Europe today. And I think, I think that's right. Uh, you know, a lot of speculation about that and I don't want to get into all of it, but the European union common market today, those nations consist of 12 nations, uh, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and United Kingdom. Those are a part of the EU common market. Now the EU is even larger than that European market. I think 20, 28 nations are part of the EU today. Uh, but the common market nations, 12 countries, that's how they exist today. Now they're separate nations, right? Sovereign nations. So they're not been brought together and, and, you know, we may see some signs of that happening, but, uh, you know, all these individual nations certainly today resistant into turning their sovereignty over to another and maybe coming together under one leader. But, uh, the fact that we can't see that happening today doesn't mean that it won't happen. And of course, scripture will. And, uh, and of course there are dozens of theories about all of that. Some of them are quite bizarre and we just can't say for sure. So I'm not going to get into that, but just suffice it to say that these 10 Kings will come together to form a single confederacy or kingdom. We could use different terminology. We probably today wouldn't use the word empire, probably not even kingdom. We might use the word confederacy and still mean the same thing. So they're going to come together and either it's going to be the antichrist who brings them together. That's one view, or I think this is probably more true to the text. They will come together just before the antichrist rises to power.
And that leads them to the third thing. The angel reveals the truth of, and that is the meaning of the little horn, the meaning of the little horn. Verse 24, and another king shall rise after them. Now note after them, all right, he shall be different from the first ones, those other 10 Kings, and shall subdue three Kings. He shall speak pompous words against the most high and shall intend to change times in law. Then the saints shall be given into his hand for a time and times and half a time. All right, what is all that?
Well, this 11th king, this little horn rises, power becomes very powerful. It's the antichrist. All right. It's the antichrist. He's called the man of lawlessness in 2 Thessalonians chapter 2 verse 3.
John and 1 John 2 18 called him the antichrist. The antichrist. He's also called the beast in Revelation chapter 13 verse 1 and following. All right, so he will arise after them, and that's a key key phrase. And it means that the 10 Kings will have formed this union or confederacy into one nation, so to speak, or empire, will have come together and formed that before the antichrist rises to power from within.
He comes from within, not from some other nation. So he's not the king of another nation that comes in and conquers. He comes from within. Remember, Daniel saw 10 horns and then suddenly one rising up among them.
So this is a person of power rising up within these 10 nations that have now banded together. What nationality will it be?
Boy, there's been a lot of speculation about that. So I think contrary to what some are teaching today, he does not represent an 11th kingdom. His part comes up within the 10.
And he will be different from the first ones in this sense, more powerful, more intelligent, more arrogant than any king that has preceded him.
And he will subdue three kings, meaning apparently there's going to be resistance. There's going to be resistance and they're going to resist his authority, his power, and he's going to destroy them.
Who will they be? I don't know. He will speak pompous words against the Most High. We've seen that already. Daniel saw that in his vision.
Now these words will be blasphemous. We can go to Revelation 13, verse 5, in the speaking of the Antichrist, the beast. And the Bible says, And he was given a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies.
He opened his mouth in blasphemy against God to blaspheme his name, his tabernacle and those who dwelt in heaven, the saints. All right.
But not only will he blaspheme God, but he will persecute or oppress the saints of the Most High. The Hebrew word translated persecute means to wear out.
It's got to wear them out. That has a little different connotation maybe to our culture. I think of it. My daddy wearing me out. You know, I kind of say, you know what that means.
But to wear them out, to wear them away. And really, it's like, it's really more likened to you and I wearing out a pair of pants. I mean, they're just so abused and so gone. They're holy and tattered and they're just worn out.
And that's what the Antichrist is going to do with the saints. Those saved, now, you know, we have to go so many places in Scripture to get the bigger picture and I just don't have time to do it, but the saved or the saints here are the saved, born again believers, but they're saved during the tribulation.
Those who are saved during the tribulation, they're going to be so harassed by Antichrist and his minions that their lives will become miserable and on a much larger scale than what we see in pockets of the world today.
So these are just foreshadowings of a time to come. What's going on in the Middle Eastern countries, persecution in some of these countries is just a drop in the bucket compared to what it's going to be like during the tribulation for born again believers who are saved in the tribulation.
Under Antichrist there will be a worldwide abolition of religious freedom completely. See, we already have that today. Seeing more and more of it today.
Yeah, but it won't be anything like, it's not anything like it will be one day. Daniel 9, 27, he shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering. I don't want to get too much into this, but you know there will be a revival of the rebuilding of the temple and revival of sacrifice and offerings and that will all be abolished.
An Antichrist will create and use economic pressures to force the people of the world to follow him and reject religion. Revelation chapter 13, verse 16.
He causes all both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast or the number of his name.
That translates into economic oppression. Only those who will follow the Antichrist are going to be able to get the things they need.
Next, he will intend to change times and law or laws. Times would refer to religious holidays. The laws would again, I think, refer to religious freedom laws.
He will persecute the saints for a time and times and half a time, which is three and a half years. Three and a half years and we know that from a lot of other places where these words are used.
A time is one year, times two years, half a time, half a year. So three and a half years. Daniel chapter 12 verse 7 uses the same designation of time.
Time, times, and half a time and then a little bit later in verse 11 it states the same thing numerically and it states it this way there shall be 1,290 days.
That's exactly three and a half years. Time, times, and half a time. So, the persecution of the saints living in the tribulation will continue for three and a half years. Exactly one half of the Antichrist seven year reign.
So we're to the middle of the tribulation during and then from that point on during that time the last three and a half years judgments that are described in Revelation chapters 14 through 19 will come upon this earth.
And at the end of this last three and a half years Antichrist and his kingdom will be destroyed. Verse 26 says and they shall take away his dominion to consume and destroy it forever.
And literally the Hebrews kind of like the forever phrase a little bit earlier means to destroy and to destroy to the forever. To the forever.
As if forever had some end to it. But it's just for emphasis. All right. That leads us to number three real quickly. Kingdom, the kingdom of God.
Verse 27 Then the kingdom and dominion and greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven shall be given to the people the saints of the Most High.
His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom and all dominions shall serve and obey him. So we've had seven years of the Antichrist first three and a half intense persecution and the last half intense judgment Christ comes destroys the Antichrist in his kingdom and sets up his millennial reign one thousand year reign this is the kingdom of which verse 27 is speaking.
So believers in Christ will inherit the earth just as Jesus promised they would Matthew 5 5 Blessed are the meek they shall inherit the earth.
